Genital warts Symptoms and Testing

2 mins

Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). There are over 70 different types of HPV. Warts on the genitals are most commonly symptoms of types 6 and 11, while warts on the hand are caused by a different strain (type 2). Genital warts generally appear as new ‘cauliflower’ like growths on the genitals or around the anus. They are not dangerous, but many people do seek genital warts treatment because of their appearance.

If you think you have developed genital warts, please book an appointment. Treatment will depend on the appearance of the warts and where they are. For most people, genital warts are treated using a cream at home.

There is now a vaccine that protects against genital warts (whilst also protecting against most cervical, anal, penis and throat cancers). The genital wart vaccine is now offered to all teenagers in the UK through their GP. If you’d like to be vaccinated, the HPV vaccine is available at Dean Street to all gay men aged less than 46 years old.
