Five vaccines

There are so many ways to protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections. DoxyPEP and HIV PrEP are great, but you need to remember to take them for them to work. One of the best things about vaccines is that once you’ve had them, you’re covered long term. You don’t need to do anything more.

So get them sorted, relax and enjoy your sex life.

Mpox 

UK cases of Mpox (formally Monkey pox) are rising again. Infection can make you feel really unwell with high fever, muscle and joint aches, severe headache and painful skin blisters. It’s strongly recommended that all gay men get immunised. Two doses at least one month apart.

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is x100 more infectious than HIV. That means it’s much easier to pick up during sex. The virus infects the liver. People can feel very unwell and develop jaundice (yellowing of the skin). Most people recover but about 1 in 10 don’t clear the infection. This can lead to liver scaring (cirrhosis) and liver failure. The drugs in HIV PrEP are also used to treat Hepatitis B, so taking PrEP may give some additional protection. A course of 3-4 doses followed by a blood test.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A virus also infects the liver and can cause similar symptoms to Hepatitis B. It’s caught from food or water that’s been contaminated with faeces (shit). However it can also be caught during gay sex. It’s particularly recommended if you’re into rimming or scat. Two doses 6-12 months apart.

HPV 

There are over 70 different strains of human papilloma virus (HPV). Gardasil vaccine protects against the strains linked to cancer (e.g. Throat & anus) and those that cause genital warts. Since 2019 it’s been offered to boys at school. That means men aged less than 18 may already be protected. The vaccine is recommended for all gay men aged 45 and under. Two doses at least 6 months apart. (Men under 25 only need one dose)

Gonorrhoea

Gonorrhoea can infect the penis, throat & rectum. Less commonly it can affect the eyes or testicles. Bexsero vaccine was originally developed to provide protection against meningitis B (The one that’s recently been in the news). However it also reduces the chance of catching gonorrhoea by around 40%. Studies suggest that if enough gay men are immunised, the vaccine could reduce the number of cases of gonorrhoea by 100,000 over the next 10 years. Two doses at least a month apart.
