What is PrEP?

In this programme we will support your use of a drug that, if taken regularly, can prevent you from being infected with HIV…

PrEP is a medicine that can protect you from getting HIV. It available for free on the NHS. You need to take it before having sex for it to work. Studies show that if it’s taken correctly, the chances of getting HIV while on the treatment are almost zero. It can’t protect you against other sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhoea and syphilis.

Starting

Come and see us. We’ll run some tests and usually start the treatment at the same visit. There are different ways you can take the treatment. For more information about PrEP, how to take it, monitoring and possible side effects, check out this page.
