Emergency contraception pills work best the sooner that you take them. Some pills can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex. The most effective form of emergency contraception is having a coil inserted
You can get emergency contraception pills without a prescription from many pharmacies including branches of Boots and Lloyds. Your local family planning clinic, NHS walk in centre and GP can also prescribe it for you
You can also get emergency contraception pills online at www.deanstreet.shl.uk/ (Bexley, Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, Westminster, Ealing, Harrow, Hackney, the City of London, Brent, and Kingston residents only)
You can also walk into 56 Dean Street during our opening times to discuss both the pill or coil methods. Go straight the reception on Level 1
Coils are very effective at preventing pregnancy. Please watch this video before you book
We cannot fit a coil if there is a risk of pregnancy. Before your appointment, either:
Don’t have sex for 3 weeks or
Don’t have sex from the first day of your last period until your appointment or
Keep using your usual method of contraception until your appointment
Before coming in for a coil removal or replacement, please don’t have sex for the week before
Implants are very safe and effective at preventing pregnancy
Implant insertions
There are only a very small number of times an implant cannot be fitted, for example, due to pre-existing health conditions or pregnancy risk. If you are concerned please call us in advance
Implant removal
Implants last for 3 years, after this they need to be replaced, or another method of contraception used. Think about what alternative method you might want if appropriate
